Reports Of Suspected Counterfeit Currency In Southern Tasmania

Police are investigating recent reports of suspected counterfeit currency being used in Southern Tasmania including at Berridale, Moonah, Hobart, Snug, Sandy Bay and Kingston. The denominations suspected are $50 notes and a good likeness for a real $50 note but the colouring slightly darker.

The incidents have occurred on Wednesday 15 June and Thursday 16 June 2016.

Police would like to speak to a woman aged in her early 20’s, slim build and long dark brown hair driving a 1995 white Toyota Hilux flat tray.

Most importantly ensure you check your bank notes, particularly $50 notes if you think you have a counterfeit note contact the Australian Federal Police and ensure you do the following:

  • handle the suspect banknote as little as possible and store it in an envelope
  • check your CCTV if you know who presented the notes and supply a copy of your CCTV to police when reporting the matter
  • note any relevant information, such as how it came into your possession, a description of the person who passed it, any companion(s) and any vehicle used.
  • complete the online Suspect Counterfeit Banknote Submission Form located on the AFP.gov.au website.
