Reduction of crime in Port Sorell area
Over the busy summer period commencing in December the Port Sorell, Shearwater and Hawley Beach areas had been subject to increased criminal activity.
Sheds, garages and motor vehicles were the primary target of thieves and a number of burglaries committed. Tourist areas, including the caravan parks, were the targets of opportunistic thefts over the period.
Local police have been encouraging everyone to take responsibility for the security of their possessions, to lock up and not leave valuable items in view or where they could be easily taken by thieves.
Detective Constable KNIGHT says;
“While the area will be a favourite of holiday goers up to and including Easter, we are reiterating the security messaging. The good news is that there has been a significant reduction in offences occurring recently. One of the pleasing reasons for this is that people are heeding the security message.”
“Also Detectives have conducted a number of searches which have resulted in the recovery of some of the stolen property. In recent weeks a number of people have been charged with offences committed in the area including a 21 year old Port Sorell man and a 19 year old Latrobe man. These matters are before the court.”
“While investigations are continuing, we would like to thank those members of the community who heeded our advice, taken action and also to those who have provided information.”
Anyone with any information in relation to criminal activity in these areas is encouraged to contact Devonport CIB on 6478 4036 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. A reward may be available, if the information provided leads to a conviction.
