Recreational fisheries offences – St Helens
On Wednesday December 7 2011, St Helens Marine Police seized a recreational fishing vessel and fishing equipment totalling approximately $100,000.
A 55-year-old St Helens man and a 34-year-old Launceston man will be charged with offences after they were caught with rock lobster and trevalla in excess of limits for recreational fishers.
The fish were caught east of St Helens and equipment in excess of the permitted number was being used. The vessel and equipment were seized along with the catch which has been estimated at having a retail value of up to $1800.
The two men will appear in court at a later date.
Police would like to remind fishers that there are size and bag limits on fish caught in state waters, and that some types of equipment require an annual recreational licence to be held whilst being used. More information and a licence can be obtained at www.fishing.tas.gov.au and at Service Tasmania or by calling the Fishwatch number 0427 655557.
Significant penalties upon conviction can be imposed including the forfeiture of fishing equipment and vessels.
