Refugee week, and this particular “Walk Together” event, are important to the community and will be supported by Tasmania Police.

Negotiations in relation to safety considerations and specific routes were successfully agreed upon with organisers – prior to the issue of the misleading media release this morning.

Tasmania Police continually make assessments on which public events they attend and support.  These decisions are made on a daily basis and are based on the number of people expected at the event, the impact it will have on other community members, the availability of police, safety requirements and the ongoing commitment of police to emergency response and road safety.

Most events are supported or monitored by police in close liaison with event organisers and this will continue to occur regardless of specific budget conditions.
