A provisional driver has been arrested, charged and disqualified from driving for 12 months after being caught speeding and having alcohol in his system on the Bass Highway yesterday.

Police were conducting mobile speed detection duties on the Bass Highway near Hagley around 2.15pm yesterday when they detected a green Daewoo Lanos sedan traveling at 135 kph in 110 kph zone, heading west.

The 23-year-old male driver from Newnham was taken to the Launceston Police Station for a breath analysis recording. His reading of 0.175 was more than three times the legal limit for a full Tasmanian Drivers Licence. Provisional licence holders are not permitted any alcohol in their system.

The man has been disqualified from driving for a period of 12 months.

He was bailed to appear before the Launceston Magistrate Court on Wednesday 22 August.
