Protect your Vehicles
Police are reminding people to lock their vehicles at all times and to avoid leaving valuable items in or on vehicles while they are unattended.
“Vehicle burglary and theft, are opportunistic crimes where offenders look for easy targets” Sergeant Justin Lawson said.
This continues to be an area of concern for police in Southern District. Recently we advocated installing security measures in older vehicles.
Offenders are looking for an easy ‘get’ and any sort of security device is often enough for them to leave your vehicle alone.
“An open window, unlocked door or valuable items left in clear view are too much of a temptation for many offenders to ignore. Don’t extend that opportunity.” Sergeant Lawson said.
The replacement cost of items or vehicles is far greater than a moment of your time.
“Hide valuable items out of sight and take that extra minute to double check that your vehicle is secure, before you walk away,” he said.
These messages are not new but attached are a couple of tips to increase your vehicle security:
– never leave your car unlocked or the keys in the ignition when unattended.
– lock all doors and windows before leaving your car, even if parked on your own property.
– remove valuables or hide them out of sight.
– consider a car alarm or immobiliser.
– park in a secure garage or off-street parking area when possible.
– choose a well-lit place to park at night if parking on the street.
You can also help protect other peoples property by reporting any suspicious behaviour.
