Prohibited wildlife seized

On Tuesday the 31st August 2010 officers from the Bridgewater Police Station conducted a search of an address in Bridgewater.

As a result of the search an Eastern long necked freshwater turtle was seized.

Acting Sergeant Christopher Lovell stated that it is an offence for any person to be in possession of any restricted wildlife without the written authority of the Secretary of the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment.

Any person found in possession of prohibited or restricted wildlife can be liable for a fine of up to $24,000.

Eastern long necked freshwater turtles are not native to Tasmania and are brought into the state illegally.

The 33 year old owner of the animal will be charged with Possess a Restricted Animal and will appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court at a later date.
