Possible identity of unknown deceased man
Tasmania Police is investigating new information into the identity of a deceased man found in bush land in Southern Tasmania last week.
A purchase receipt from Zurich dated 2010 and Swiss currency were located among the deceased man’s belongings. An SD card was also found. One of the photographs recovered from the SD card, which has not yet been released, indicated it had been taken in New Zealand in 2010. Police are liaising with businesses in New Zealand to confirm information in the photo.
A photo of a man was extracted from the SD card found with the body and circulated nationally and internationally. The photo was of a man standing by a foreshore. The location the photograph was taken could not be confirmed.
As a result of the photo of the man being circulated, the ABC was contacted by a man in Switzerland who believes he is the man in the photo, and the missing man may be his friend. He said the photograph was taken on the coast of Oregon, USA in 2010.
He said his friend was a forty-four year old Swiss man who had previously visited Tasmania. He was last seen by his family in December 2010 when he left Switzerland to go travelling. The ABC passed on this information to police.
Police are liaising with the family and Swiss authorities to verify the information.
“We are working to confirm the deceased man’s identity. It’s important to provide answers to the deceased’s family and return the remains to them,” said Detective A/Sergeant Michael Manning.
