Port Sorell man caught speeding 58kmh over the limit
A 23 year old Port Sorell man has been disqualified for 4 months and received a $900 fine after he was caught speeding by 58km/h over the posted speed limit.
Around 6am this morning, police were conducting speed checks in the 60km/h zone of Wesley Vale Road as part of National Road Safety Week.
At this time they detected the man travelling at 118 km/h – 58 km/h above the posted speed limit.
The man was intercepted and subsequently issued with a traffic infringement notice for $900 and received a disqualification period of 4 months.
Senior Sergeant Stewart Williams of Western Road and Public Order Services said that National Road Safety Week was a great opportunity to remind people of the dangers of speeding on our roads.
“Speeding features regularly in the causes for serious and fatal road crashes. The speed limits are not decide by police and are established through an analysis of the type of road and the use of those roads. They are in place to keep us safe, both as road users and users of the areas around roads,” Senior Sergeant Williams said.
“Apart from running the risk of a significant financial penalty and period of disqualification, driving like this risks the lives of the driver and other road users. It’s an example of a serious disregard for those rules that keep us safe on the road, with the potential for life threatening consequences.”
Throughout this week police will continue an intense focus on offences that lead to serious and fatal crashes. If you are on the road, be prepared to see them. Even if you can’t, it doesn’t mean they aren’t there.
