Police target drivers using mobile phones
Today police officers from the Southern District conducted an operation targeting drivers who use their mobile phones while their vehicle is moving.
Twelve drivers were detected using their mobile phone while driving, while other drivers were detected for failing to stop at a red light and failing to wear seatbelt in the two hour targeted operation on the Brooker Highway between 1pm and 3pm today.
Police expressed their disappointment that drivers continue to drive while using their mobile phones despite recent publicity about the danger of this practice.
Police wish to remind drivers that operating a mobile phone is not only a traffic offence; it distracts drivers from giving their full attention to their surroundings and other road users.
Inattention is one of the fatal five risk factors in motor vehicle crashes.
Police will continue to target drivers who ignore the rules and place the general public at risk as part of their zero fatality target.
