Police remind bushwalkers to be prepared

Police have reminded bushwalkers to be prepared following an incident where interstate visitors became lost whilst bushwalking near Blue Tier last night.

Acting Sgt Rob Shepherd, of St Helens Police, said that a man and woman in their 40s were walking with their four children aged between 10-17 years on the Blue Tier Range Reserve at Lottah, when they become disoriented about 7pm last night.

They rang police from a mobile phone to request assistance, however they continued to walk and were located by police at Moorina about 9pm.

The family were not injured, although they were hungry and tired because they weren’t carrying food, water or appropriate clothing.

“This is a timely reminder in the lead up to the Easter break where many people go bushwalking or venture into the wilderness,” Acting Sgt Shepherd said.

“If you’re going bushwalking – our message is simple – be prepared. Tell people where you’re going and what time you’re expected to be back, pack plenty of food and water and take appropriate clothing.

“If you don’t own an EPIRB – hire one. Also if you ring authorities for assistance, stay put as we’ll find you much quicker.”

Advice for bushwalkers:

  • Check your locality, ask for information on terrain / conditions from local information services.
  • Check the weather forecast before you go.
  • Plan your trip and account for all weather eventualities.
  • Know your level of experience – if a track is labelled advanced don’t attempt it if you’re a beginner.
  • Pack plenty of food rations and know where you can obtain water along the way.
  • Hire or buy a Person locator Beacon or EPIRB device.
  • Leave your contact details and planned trip details with someone. Tell them where you are going and how long you expect the walk will take.
