Police out in force this Australia Day long weekend
Police will be out in force across the state this Australia Day long weekend to help motorists keep safe on our roads.
Assistant Commissioner Richard Cowling said that the recent Christmas/New Year Operation Crossroads period had been devastating, with five deaths and 19 serious injuries.
“Tragically, five people didn’t make it home this Christmas/New Year. So, instead of celebrating time together, that’s 24 families who have been devastated by road trauma,” Assistant Commissioner Cowling said.
“It only takes a split second for people’s lives to be changed forever. We want everyone to get home safely.
“Many motorcyclists will take advantage of the good weather forecast for the long weekend and take the opportunity to enjoy a ride. Motorists need to be mindful of motorcycles on the road, as riders are vulnerable road users. Riders need to ensure they ride to their capabilities, not to their limits.”
Police will be out in numbers from Friday 25 January to Monday 28 January focusing on the ‘Fatal Five’ contributors to road deaths:
- Speed
- Seatbelts
- Alcohol and drugs
- Distraction
- Fatigue
As part of the operation police will be conducting random breath tests and speed enforcement operations at various locations all around the state.
“Police will be patrolling alternative routes out of towns and cities, targeting the back streets, rural roads and entertainment districts,” Assistant Commissioner Cowling said.
“We want people to buckle up, watch their speed, stay under the alcohol limit, pay attention to the road and rest if they’re tired.
“Take advantage of one of the Driver Reviver stations being held around the state to have a cuppa and a break from driving.
“And remember, you could still be over the limit even if you’ve had a few hours’ sleep. Picking up your car too early in the day could mean you’re still affected by alcohol.
“Don’t ruin your long weekend with a decision to drive when you shouldn’t, or drive in a way that puts you, your family or others at risk.”
