Police issue road safety warning over trail bikes
Police have issued a road safety warning over trail bikes following another serious crash yesterday.
Acting Inspector Ian Mathewson said that police have again called on road trail bike riders to slow down, ride responsibly and wear appropriate safety gear after a 32 year old Gagebrook man suffered serious upper body injuries in a single motorcycle crash in Herdsmans Cove last night. The rider wasn’t wearing a helmet.
It follows the death of a 16 year old boy in Riverside in a trail bike crash last week. The next day, two of his friends were detected hooning at speeds of up to 130kmh in a 70kmh zone – at the same location their friend died in the fatal bike crash.
“People are risking their lives or suffering serious injury by behaving in this way,” Acting Inspector Mathewson said.
“No one wants to see the pain and suffering experienced by family and friends following an unnecessary tragedy such as a crash caused by hooning.
“If you are detected by police riding dangerously, there’s a high probability your bike will be seized.”
“Trail bike riders that we’re concerned about are often unregistered, unlicensed, riding unroadworthy bikes and wearing little or no appropriate protective gear. It’s a serious safety issue.
“While most road users respect each other and themselves enough to stick to the road rules and limits, there are some who continue to believe they are above the law and that the rules do not apply to them.
“We’re calling on road trail bike riders to protect themselves and other road users to ride responsibly, ensure they’re licensed and their motorbike is registered and roadworthy, and wear appropriate safety gear. It’s for their own safety.
“We’re also asking families to ensure that if their children are riding trail bikes that they are licensed, the bike is registered and in a roadworthy condition. The risk is just not worth it.”
Anyone who may have witnessed a yellow trail bike being ridden in the Herdsmans Cove area on 13 March 2017 is asked to contact Constable Enman at the Bridgewater Police Station on 62684103, or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800 333 000 or report online crimestopperstas.com.au.
