Police are investigating the circumstances of a crash on the South Arm Highway this morning where a pedestrian sustained serious injuries. 

Around 6.05am emergency services responded to a report of a male pedestrian struck by a vehicle on the South Arm Highway, at the intersection of Oceana Drive. 

The pedestrian, aged in his 40s, was struck by a white Mitsubishi ASX. 

The man was transported to the Royal Hobart Hospital where he is listed in a serious but stable condition. 

The scene was attended by police from Bellerive Station, and a scene examination has been conducted by Crash Investigation Services and Forensic Services.

A police investigation is being conducted to determine the cause of the crash.

At this early stage in the investigation, police have established that the Mitsubishi was travelling south from the Shoreline Round-a-bout towards Rokeby when it collided with the man who was crossing the highway.

The driver of the vehicle was not physically injured. They remained at the scene and are assisting police with the investigation.

Traffic diversions were in place for some time this morning and police thank the public for their patience.
