Police are investigating a deliberately lit fire in Newnham last night which damaged a garage and vehicle.

Just before midnight, Tasmania Fire Service and Tasmania Police attended a report of a structure fire on Georgetown Road.

On arrival of emergency services, the fire was taking hold of the garage, however concerted efforts from Tasmania Fire Services quickly prevented the fire from spreading to neighbouring houses.

The garage and vehicle inside sustained relatively minor damage, with an estimate of about $10,000-$15,000.

A fire scene examiner attended the scene and determined the fire to deliberately lit.

No injuries were reported.
