Police charge 21 year old man with high range drink driving offence
Police from Launceston Road and Public Order Services last night have charged a 21-year-old Newnham man with exceeding the prescribed alcohol after being alerted to a crash in Newham earlier in the night.
Police allege the man was involved in a crash at BP Newnham and then left the scene returning to his home address. Police located the heavily intoxicated man lying next to his vehicle in the driveway of his home and the subsequent investigation into his driving resulted in him returning a breath analysis reading of 0.221, four times over the legal limit. It is also alleged the man was driving against a court imposed disqualification after being found guilty of a similar offence earlier this year.
Sergeant Boyd of Launceston Police stated ‘drink driving is one of our fatal five offences; an action that can and will contribute to serious injury or death. It is concerning that people continue to drink and drive despite all the warnings.
We all use the roads so we are all responsible for ensuring they are safe’.
The male was detained to appear in court at 11:30am this morning.
Anyone who saw a blue Toyota Hilux utility in the Newham area around 9pm last night is asked to contact Tasmania Police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers anonymously on 1800 333 000.
