Police in Launceston are calling for public assistance to identify the three occupants of a stolen truck that reversed into a police vehicle and then evaded police in Newnham last night.

Police intercepted the five-tonne truck on the East Tamar Highway at Newham just after 10pm due to the way it was being driven. The truck then reversed into the police car at speed while officers were getting out of their vehicle.

The driver has left the scene, evading police before abandoning the truck on Alanvale Road at Newnham.

The police officers involved were not injured in the incident.

The truck was a 5 tonne Mitsubishi Canter with registration number A82ST, which was later reported stolen by the owner.

Anyone who saw the truck around this time or who has information about the three occupants is asked to contact Launceston Police on 131 444.
