Police call for witnesses after fatal crash

Police are calling for witnesses following a fatal crash on the West Tamar Highway at Loira in northern Tasmania.

At 4:18pm on Sunday 13/5/2018 a fatal crash occurred when two utes collided on the West Tamar Highway, Loira.

Sadly, a 28 year old man from Riverside was killed.  He had been driving a white Toyota Hilux Ute north, towing a trailer.

The other vehicle was a gold Toyota Landcruiser ute that had been travelling south.  There were no passengers in either vehicle.

Both vehicles sustained severe damage and both drivers were trapped, each with critical injuries.

Local police units arrived quickly and assisted bystanders in rendering first aid until Ambulance Tasmania, TFS and SES units arrived.

Unfortunately, the driver of the Hilux died at the scene before he could be extricated.

The driver of the Landcruiser was rescued from his vehicle and was airlifted to the LGH by the Westpac Rescue helicopter.  He underwent surgery for various non-life threatening injuries.

Initial investigations by crash investigators and forensics officers indicate that the   Landcruiser was on the wrong side of the road at the point of impact.  The matter will be investigated to determine the reason for that and to prepare a report for the Coroner.

Anyone who saw the crash or either vehicle immediately prior is asked to contact Northern Crash Investigation Services on 131444.
