Police and Crime Stoppers are continuing to encourage people to hand in unwanted or illegal firearms, with a firearms amnesty at Huonville this weekend. 

Between 10am and 2pm on Saturday 24 July, police will be at Huonville Police Station, to receive unwanted and illegal firearms, ammunition, and gel blasters that imitate firearms. 

“Members of the Huon Valley community with an illegal or unwanted firearm or ammunition in their possession are urged to surrender the items to police at a firearms amnesty at Huonville Police Station on Saturday,” said Sergeant Andrew Fogarty.

“Under a permanent firearms amnesty, people can surrender firearms and ammunition without fear of being prosecuted for the possession.” 

Anyone attending the amnesty with firearms or ammunition in their vehicle, is asked to drive up to the location, leave the items in their car, and walk up and speak to officers on site who will safely retrieve the items. 

“If anyone is unable or uncomfortable to transport items to surrender them to police, they can attend the location and speak to officers, or phone their local police station, and police will organise collection,” said Sergeant Fogarty. 

Tasmania Police has a permanent firearms amnesty and regularly conducts mobile firearms amnesties across the state. 

CEO of Crime Stoppers Tasmania, Jane Crosswell said “Between July and September, Crime Stoppers Australia are conducting a National Illegal Firearms Campaign, aimed at reducing the number of unwanted, unregistered and illegal firearms in the community by encouraging people to hand in firearms, and we are delighted to support Tasmania Police with their amnesty activities.”
