PCYC Building Launceston – Update
The newer part of the Launceston PCYC is expected to reopen in the week commencing October 19 after the entire building was closed recently due to concerns that dust in the older part of the building contained asbestos.
While air quality tests showed safe levels, the building was immediately closed while specialist testing was undertaken.
Samples from 17 sites around the building were taken for testing on 30 September.
All samples from the newer part of the building were negative to asbestos.
One of the four samples from the older part of the building returned a positive result for asbestos.
An accredited Occupational Health Safety and Welfare Hygienist has been working with management since the closure on September 25 in relation to the investigation, testing and removal processes.
“Specialist cleaning is being undertaken to ensure that the premises as a whole, is as clean and hygienic as it can be,” said Northern District Commander Brett Smith.
“The older part of the building will be sealed off from the newer part while the cleaning is undertaken. WorkSafe Tasmania has approved this course of action,” he said.
At this stage, programs due to start next week have been delayed, however PCYC will keep its members updated on start dates via email and the PCYC Facebook page.
A full briefing will be offered to core personnel of the PCYC prior to re-opening to address any queries or concerns.
The building was subject of an asbestos audit in 2006 noting that the building, like many others of its era, contained some asbestos building materials, which in controlled circumstances, does not pose any adverse risk and adequate control measures were put into effect at that time.
