Police are again urging all drivers to obey speed limits after a P-plater was caught travelling 42km/h over the speed limit on the Bass Highway at Rocky Cape.

Police intercepted a Commodore sedan after it was detected travelling at 142 km/h in a 100 km/h zone about 9pm yesterday. 

The driver, a 23-year-old woman from Victoria, has been disqualified from driving for three months and was given 6 demerit points and a fine of $735.25.

Sergeant Lee-Anne Walters said it is incredibly disappointing that drivers are continuing to disobey the road rules and speed limits.

“When you speed, and you are on unfamiliar roads, you put not only yourself but other road users at a much higher risk of a crash,” she said.

“It’s alarming that the message is not getting through to some road users.”

“Slowing down, obeying the road rules, and being prepared, especially at night, could save a collision or even save your life.”

“It’s also important to remember rural roads can have often have farm animals and machinery using them as well as many native animals are out at night.”

“Road users need to drive to suit the conditions and at a speed that allows you to avoid a potential collision with wildlife, as they are often drawn to the roadside.”
