Overnight rescues in Northern Tasmania
Police and other emergency services responded to two separate incidents involving lost walkers in northern Tasmania last night.
An 82-year-old man lost his way near Walkers Lookout, Flinders Island and local police, SES, and Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service staff commenced a search for the man, who was located just after midnight by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.
Weather conditions were challenging with low temperatures, strong winds, small hail and driving rain.
The walker was taken for medical assessment following his exposure to the elements.
Two people also became lost on a track leading up to Quamby Bluff, near Deloraine after setting out from their accommodation.
Police and SES crews located the pair and returned them to safety.
Inspector Luke Manhood said weather conditions in Tasmania are capable of changing quickly.
“We’re reminding people to be prepared before embarking on walks in the Tasmanian wilderness.”
“It is important that anyone planning on exploring Tasmania’s wilderness or alpine areas carries the necessary equipment to keep themselves safe should they run into difficulty, even if you are a local or experienced bush walker.”
Bush walking safety tips:
• Research the intended trip and ensure it is within your abilities and fitness level, check the expected weather forecast, and have a plan.
• Let someone know before you go and ensure someone knows your route and expected return time.
• Ensure you’re prepared with appropriate equipment, clothing, footwear, food and water, and a first aid kit.
• Always carry a fully charged mobile phone and/or a PLB. A portable charger to extend battery life can also help when you are lost.
