Operation Unite – 2 December 2011

Operation Unite, the campaign against binge drinking and violence, returns to entertainment districts around the nation and New Zealand this weekend (2 December 2011).

With the season for Christmas celebrations ahead, Tasmania Police wants to ensure everyone can enjoy a night out that is not marred by the consequences of risky drinking behaviour.

“We are asking people not to over indulge when they’re having a few drinks and to put the brakes on friends who tend to have a few too many.  Starting a fight or becoming a victim is not the way you want to spend Christmas,” said the Commissioner of Police, Darren Hine.

In Tasmania, Operation Unite will focus additional police numbers on Hobart’s waterfront and the Launceston, Burnie and Devonport entertainment areas. Police will also increase visits to licensed premises to check requirements under the Liquor Licensing Act 1990.

“The Operation is not about stopping people having a good time; just the opposite.  We want to draw attention to the consequences of misusing alcohol in public places, and help people to feel safer when out enjoying Tasmania’s nightlife” said Mr Hine.

While the number of public place assaults in Tasmania has been decreasing for more than a decade, most are still occurring after midnight in, or around licensed premises on Friday and Saturday nights.

“These are the times we know more people are likely to be affected by alcohol.  Operation Unite is about reminding everyone in the community that alcohol should be used in moderation.”

“It is disturbing that data shows in recent years more young women are represented as victims of public place assaults, particularly in the 15 – 19 age group.”

“Monitor the number of drinks you’re having, look after your friends, and if they do end up drinking too much, then put them in a taxi, so they get home safely,” said Mr Hine.
