Operation Unification: A national crackdown on the illicit drug trade
Phone In Day – 19th November 2010
Tasmanians who may have any information about the importation, manufacture and distribution of illicit drugs are asked to take the opportunity to pass it on to Police today.
Tasmania Police has joined law enforcement agencies across Australia, and all state and territory Crime Stoppers programs, in a nationwide offensive against illegal drugs.
Operation Unification takes place today, Friday November 19, and people are being asked to ring the Crime Stoppers hot line on 1800 333 000 with any information relating to drugs, particularly amphetamines.
“There has been an increased focus by Tasmania Police on the production of illicit drugs within this State. Information from the public is an important part of our intelligence gathering,” said Acting Assistant Commissioner, Donna Adams.
“As a result, Tasmania Police has shut down active clandestine laboratories this year. “
“We urge Tasmanians who have any information about illegal drug activity to take the opportunity today to pass that information on through Crime Stoppers. Your information could be crucial in helping police locate these clandestine laboratories,” said the Chairman of Crime Stoppers Tasmania, Brian Aherne.
The telltale signs of clandestine laboratories include:
- Unusual or “chemical” odours coming from premises
- Chemical containers, glassware or related items at premises
- Unusual types or quantities of rubbish on a property
- Premises with blackened out windows (including blinds/curtains constantly drawn) and fortification
- Visitors attending premises carrying large containers or unusual items, or
- Frequent visitors attending premises at unusual times.
Members of the public are asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 for any information that may assist Tasmania Police.
