Operation Crossroads – Day 8 Report – 31 Dec 2016
A serious two vehicle crash yesterday morning at Herrick, in the states north between a Camry sedan and a Holden utility saw the two occupants from the Camry airlifted to the Launceston General Hospital with serious injuries. The two occupants from the utility were also admitted to hospital with serious injuries.
Initial investigations indicate that driving at excessive speed to the conditions may have played a considerable part in the occurrence of the crash.
Motorists are urged to not become complacent in their driving manner as we approach the New Year. Please remember the ‘fatal five’ key contributing factors to serious and fatal motor vehicle crashes.
Motorists who were travelling to the Falls Festival over the last few days appear to have been adhering to our road safety messages – there have been no reported crashes on the Arthur Highway between Sorell and Marion Bay to date – Well done!
In the last 24 hours a further 11 drink drivers have been removed from our roads by Tasmania Police during Operation Crossroads. Well over half of those drink drivers returned medium to high alcohol readings with a 56 male in the south of the state returning a reading of .19%. Motorists are reminded that not only will drink driving cost you your licence between 3 – 36 months for the first offence, face imprisonment or worse, it could cost you or another road user’s life.
So, if you plan to go out and celebrate this New Year, make your plans now as to how you intend to get there and return. And remember, if you end up drinking, you may still be over the limit the next morning – don’t take the risk!
Tasmania Police will continue to be out in numbers as part of Operation Crossroads throughout the state. Tasmania Police will be conducting a Random Breath Test Operation at Bream Creek on 1 January 2017 at the conclusion of the Falls Festival.
Motorists are urged to drive to the conditions, slow down, and be safe on the roads.
