Fatal and Serious Crashes 2016 2015
Fatal Crashes 0 0
Serious Crashes 1 5

This is the fourth full day of Operation Crossroads.

Tasmania Police are cautiously optimistic about the behaviour of Tasmanian motorists to date in this operation.   But it’s not over yet, Tasmania Police continue to conduct high visibility and covert traffic operations in all areas around the state.

As it stands this year we remain at no fatal accidents and 1 serious accident for the Easter period.  This is still one serious accident too many but is still an encouraging sign at this stage of the operation.  I encourage motorists to continue to drive safely to minimise the potential of becoming one of these terrible statistics.

Speeding offences are creeping up with 211 recorded across the state yesterday.  Speeding was identified as one of the contributing factors to the one serious accident that occurred on Saturday at Norwood.  Speeding is the top contributor to serious and fatal accidents in our state.

Mobile phone offences increased significantly with 8 being recorded yesterday which is more than double what was recorded for the first three days of the operation.  Using a mobile phone whilst driving is an extremely dangerous activity to undertake.  Please pull over if you need to answer your phone, make a call or send a text.

Today is generally the day that people will be driving home from their Easter Holidays.  Expect to see more traffic on the roads today.  Tasmania Police ask all motorists to take their time and take breaks if they are tired.  ‘Take A Break’ stops are set up at three areas around the state at; St Peters Pass, Parramatta Creek and Fossy River.  The wonderful folks from the SES are manning these locations and would love to see you pop in for a free cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit or two.

Tasmania Police ask each and every motorist to drive carefully and be continually aware of the ‘fatal 5’; the five biggest contributors to serious and fatal accidents on our roads, these being:

speed

failure to wear seatbelts or helmets

Alcohol and Drugs

Distraction

Driving whilst tired
