Operation Crossroads – Day 10 Report – 02 Jan 2017
Last night at midnight, saw the conclusion of Operation Crossroads for 2016/17.
Tasmania Police are pleased that there were no reported fatalities resulting from the ‘fatal five’ contributors to fatal and serious injury crashes on Tasmanian roads during the operation period.
“This is a very remarkable result; this is the first time for a significant period that Tasmania has not recorded a fatality during the Christmas and New Year period”, said A/Inspector Ian Mathewson, “It is comforting that the majority of motorists have listened to our daily messages on the ‘fatal five’ and have adopted safe-driving practices”.
Attending fatal crashes is a challenging duty for emergency responders and it’s a difficult task to inform families that someone they love had died. This festive season, due to safe driving practices by motorists, Tasmania Police were not required to perform this dreaded task.
Motorists are reminded that although Operation Crossroads has concluded, Tasmania Police will remain committed to enforcing and encouraging safe driving behaviour throughout 2017.
So, as a matter of practice, every time you drive a motor vehicle, consider the ‘fatal five’:
- Seatbelts – make sure you and your occupants are properly restrained.
- Speeding – drive to the conditions and stay within the posted speed limit.
- Alcohol/drugs and driving do not mix.
- Distractions – stay alert and focus on the road ahead.
- Fatigue – if you are tired, safely pull off the road and rest.
