Operation Crossroads – Day 1 Report – 24 Dec 2016
Operation Crossroads commenced at 00:01 on Friday, 23 December 2016.
Although it is too early to start drawing meaningful comparisons to previous years it is encouraging to see a drop in most offences and a significant increase in high visibility random drug and alcohol testing.
Whilst the reduction in the below statistics is pleasing, it does indicate motorists are still committing offences on our roads and these have the potential to cause crashes and risk life.
At 1.45am on Friday 23 December 2016 (less than 2 hours into Operation Crossroads) police attended a single vehicle crash on the Cygnet Coast Road, Wattle Grove. The crash was low impact and there were no injuries. A contributing factor to the crash was alcohol with a 57 year old female from NSW returning a .214 % alcohol reading.
Tasmania Police ask each and every motorist to drive carefully and be continually aware of the ‘fatal 5’; the five biggest contributors to serious and fatal accidents on our roads, these being:
- Speed
- Failure to wear seatbelts or helmets
- Alcohol and Drugs
- Distraction
- Driving whilst tired
If it helps, drive as if the car behind you is an unmarked police vehicle, it could very well be.
