Official Visit
The Tasmania Police role ensuring the safe visit to Tasmania of His Excellency Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China, and Madame Peng, is the most significant security operation undertaken in this state.
We don’t disclose our resourcing for operational reasons, however we’ve have had a significant number of uniformed and plain clothed police officers and specialist units assigned specifically to duties associated with the official visit.
The planning for the security arrangements and road closures has been a significant project underway for several months. The coordination of resources and specialist capabilities has ensured the official visit has been safe and smooth.
I’d like to thank all the officers involved in duties supporting the official visit, and those who were available to respond to the policing needs of the community.
I’d also like to acknowledge the Tasmanian community for their patience and cooperation with the road closures and directions of police during the official visit.
There were small number of protesters along the Tasman Highway, and on the River Derwent, however they were peaceful and there were no issues for police.
