Officers return from Solomon Islands
Four members of Tasmania Police who have spent the past 14 months on secondment to Solomon Islands as part of the Australian Federal Police are returning home today.
In February 2004 the Federal Government formed the International Deployment Group (IDG) through the Australian Federal Police to manage the deployment of Australian civilian police overseas. This initiative was to provide leadership within the law and justice sector in the delivery of offshore law enforcement initiatives.
In August 2009, seven members of Tasmania Police commenced a 60 week IDG deployment in Solomon Islands. Those officers have been involved in capacity building initiatives, training, education and effective policing practices that assist in re-building community confidence in the local police force as a part of the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI).
The officers worked in a range of advisory roles in areas such as; community policing, serious crime investigation, police communications, maritime operations and traffic operations.
“Since the commencement of this project 34 Tasmanian Police officers have had the opportunity to utilise their skills and expertise and assist in training in East Timor and Solomon Islands,” said Acting Assistant Commissioner, Donna Adams.
“The experience and knowledge gained by the officers during their overseas deployment has been beneficial to the Tasmania Police Service and the Tasmanian community,” said Ms Adams.
