Detectives from Bellerive CIB arrested and charged a 50 year old man from Moonah following a serious assault at New Town Road, New Town, on Saturday morning.

On Saturday 4 October 2014 a 71 year old woman was seriously assaulted and she remains in a critical condition in hospital.

Witnesses to the assault provided police with a photograph of a person of interest, who was identified as the result of a post on the Tasmania Police Facebook site.

Later that afternoon the offender was taken into custody and appeared in an after-hours court. He has been remanded until later this year to appear in the Hobart Supreme Court charged with Cause grievous bodily harm.

Police would like to thank those people who assisted the victim at the scene and those who later contacted police providing the identity of the offender.
