Off-Duty Police Officer Assaulted
Hobart CIB Detectives are investigating the assault of a woman and an off-duty police officer in Hampden Road, Battery Point, on Friday 10 January 2014.
“The police Inspector, who was off-duty at the time, intervened in a physical dispute between a man and a woman on Hampton Road near Dewitt Street in Battery Point at about 8:00pm on Friday night, 10 January 2014,” said Detective Acting Inspector Craig Joel.
The man and woman, who police allege are known to each other, were arguing as the police inspector approached. Police allege the man had his hand gripped around the woman’s throat.
“The police inspector identified himself as a police officer and tried to stop the assault. He was punched in the face before he grappled the man to the ground. The man and woman then fled,” he said.
The police inspector received cuts and bruises as well as concussion and will not return to active duty for at least one week.
“Detectives have today arrested a 29 year old man from Taroona and charged him with assaulting a 30 year old woman, along with assaulting the police officer in the execution of his duty,” said Detective Acting Inspector Joel.
The man was detained in custody to appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court later today.
Detectives have thanked everyone who has already come forward with information. Any person who saw the man and woman arguing in Hampden Road, or the assault on the police officer, is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
