North-West drivers charged during targeted operation

Ten people have been charged after North-West police conducted a targeted operation across the past week.

Officers from Road Policing Services, Taskforce Scelus, CIB and Uniform Divisions focused on proactive road safety patrols in both rural and urban areas.

It comes after what Inspector Adam Spencer described as a disappointing year for driver behaviour.

Police in the North-West alone have apprehended 986 drink and drug drivers and 802 motorists driving without a licence or while disqualified since January 1, and caught 3524 speeding drivers – including 134 who were exceeding the limit by more than 30km/h.

“The behaviour is unacceptable and endangers not only the driver, but all road users,” said.

“We will not tolerate it and Tasmania Police will continue to take strong action statewide to ensure those disobeying the road rules and putting lives at risk will be held accountable.

“Road safety is about prevention, and we will continue to undertake proactive patrols – both covert and high-visibility – and focus on educating drivers on safe behaviour.”
