The commitment of Tasmania Police to improving safety on our roads has been enhanced with the addition of new equipment.

The Motor Accidents Insurance Board (MAIB) contributes funds to Tasmania Police each year for the purpose of improving road safety and reducing the number of serious casualties on Tasmania’s roads.

Tasmania Police has used $164,000 of the MAIB funds to upgrade and replace road safety vans, speed cameras, speed detection units and breath and drug testing units.

The new equipment includes:

• 4 new Road Safety Vans (provides a high visibility speed, breath and drug detection base)
• 8 in-car Radar Speed Devices (2 for each District);
• 5 handheld Speed Detection Units (1 for each District, one spare);
• 40 handheld Breath Testing Units (10 for each District); and
• 1,500 Roadside Drug Swipes.

“Speed, alcohol and drugs remain significant factors in serious and fatal injury crashes. The road toll in Tasmania is at its lowest for many years, but we need to remember that 122 people have been seriously injured and 14 people have been killed in crashes this year,” said Assistant Commissioner, Donna Adams.

“Road safety is a priority for Tasmania Police and we target high-risk driving behaviours through a range of strategies, including high-visiblity patrols and speed and drink driving operations.”

“The replacement equipment funded by MAIB will assist our traffic teams in undertaking this core function,” said Ms Adams.
