New Look Police Uniforms

Some of the changes to the Tasmania Police uniform will be visible on the streets from 19 April 2011, with the introduction of new motorcycle jackets and baseball-style caps.

The new high visibility motorcycle jackets are made from a padded lightweight material that is suitable for Tasmania’s climate all year round.  Two of the jackets have been issued and all motorcycle police officers will have the new jackets in the coming months.

Police officers will now have the option of wearing a baseball-style cap.  A recent uniform review found the cap to be more comfortable and practical for operational duties.  The cap offers high UV protection and is made from breathable material.  All officers up to the rank of Inspector will be issued with a cap, which can be worn from today.

The traditional peak caps will be required for ceremonial occasions.

“These additions are the first of several changes to the Tasmania Police uniform to improve comfort and safety,” said Assistant Commissioner Phil Wilkinson.

“Other changes to the uniform, such as new jackets, pants and jumpers, will be introduced later in the year,” said Mr Wilkinson.
