New Glenorchy Divisional Headquarters – Update

Work is progressing on the new Glenorchy Divisional Headquarters development and the first tenants, the Tasmania Police Marine and Rescue unit, have moved into the site.

The State Government has provided $6.15m for the development.

“The new headquarters will provide a contemporary and well-equipped 24 hour policing complex to meet the needs of the Glenorchy community and the 90 officers and 6 state service employees who will be based there,” said Acting Assistant Commissioner, Colin Little.

“The new site will include office accommodation, public enquiries and charging facilities. The Marine & Rescue unit has already moved to Glenorchy from the Federal St site, resulting in a significant saving in lease costs,” said Mr Little.

“Importantly, the property is close to the Glenorchy CBD, and provides the opportunity to continue to provide a strong link to the Glenorchy community.”

The site is a significant size, set on almost one hectare of land. It is approximately 5 times bigger than the old Glenorchy Station site.

“Approximately 1000sqm of surplus space remains available to include other Departmental sections in future,” said Mr Little.

The construction has been undertaken by Tasmanian company, Fairbrother, employing up to 50 construction workers during the build. Construction costs total $3.9million for all works. Work started in February this year and is expected to be complete and fully operational by September 2014.

The existing Glenorchy Police Station building will be on the market later this month.
