National Police Football Carnival
The season for football finals is not over, with one more fiercely contested competition on the calendar.
Teams from police jurisdictions across the country come together in Hobart this week for the National Police Football Championships. This year’s Carnival is the biggest in its 25 year history with more than 180 police members participating.
The Championship is decided on the number of wins over the week long carnival.
“The competition is played in the spirit of fun and friendship, however the matches are also highly competitive and intense,” said Tasmania Devils Coach, Inspector Doug Rossiter.
“Particularly competitive are the highlight of the rounds; the three matches played for perpetual trophies in honour of police officers who have been killed in the line of duty,” said Inspector Rossiter.
The Tasmania v Western Australia match on Wednesday, 10 October is played for the Ty Bennett Memorial Shield, in remembrance of the Tasmanian officer killed in a car crash while on duty in 1999.
The inaugural match of the Championship was held in Hobart in 1987 and has been rotated through the states. This year South Australia will be defending the title against the strong Victorian side which boast 2 former AFL players, Aaron Henneman, former Essendon defender, and Peter Street, former Geelong and Western Bulldogs ruckman.
