Multiple vehicle crashes in morning fog
On Monday 19th July 2010 at approximately 8.45 am police attended 3 separate crashes involving a total of 16 vehicles on the East Tamar Highway at Newnham.
The first crash involving 11 vehicles occurred approximately one kilometre north from the Mowbray Connector, in the north bound lanes.
Police at the same time also attended the scene of two separate accidents approximately 500 metres north of this collision, involving three vehicles, and 200 metres south involving two vehicles.
Fortunately only minor injuries were caused. Only one female driver was taken to the Launceston General Hospital with minor spinal injuries and a laceration to her head.
It appears that the crashes were a result of the weather conditions with thick fog reducing visibility, and a large amount of traffic on the highway at the time.
Tasmania Police would like to remind all drivers to drive to the prevailing weather conditions and slow down when visibility is reduced and also to turn your head lights on.
It is also very important to maintain sufficient space between vehicles when driving to assist in avoiding collisions.
