Multiple charges of dishonesty and arson

Detectives have today charged a 54-year-old man from Geeveston with multiple charges of arson and dishonestly offences.

The charges are the culmination of a three month investigation by Detectives from Kingston CIB which commenced on 6 January 2017 when the man’s house at Geeveston was destroyed by fire.  The man has been charged with arson and attempting to dishonestly acquire a financial advantage, as a result of claiming insurance for the fire damage related to the property at Geeveston.

The man has also been charged with the following:

  • Arson and dishonestly acquiring a financial advantage in relation to two fires in 2012 which occurred at his previous address in Blackmans Bay.
  • Unlawfully setting fire to property and dishonestly acquiring a financial advantage in relation to a fire which destroyed his VW Combi in 2007 at Blackmans Bay.
  • Injury to property and dishonestly acquiring a financial advantage in relation to the destruction of his MG motor car in 2014 at Triabunna.
  • Aggravated burglary and stealing, and injury to property which occurred in 2006 at Blackmans Bay.

The charges relate to nearly $1 million worth of insurance claims.

The man has been bailed to appear in the Hobart Magistrates court in May 2017.
