Mowbray man arrested following incident

A 46 year old Mowbray man is in custody following the successful resolution of an incident where he lunged at police with a knife.

Commander Brett Smith said today that the man was arrested shortly before 1pm today and is currently assisting police with their enquiries.

“Police were called to Conway Street unit about 5am this morning following reports a man had breached a restraint order involving his mother.

“Police entered the unit where a man was found to be carrying a kitchen knife.

“A police officer was barricaded in a bathroom for a brief amount of time. The officer was freed by the removal of a side window, and is shaken but uninjured.

“The mother was also safely removed from the unit.”

Police and emergency services attended the scene, with further resources from the Special Operations Group also called in.

Commander Brett Smith said that specialist negotiators utilising a range of tactics were used in an attempt to contact the man over several hours.

“Officers took the opportunity to attempt communication with the man through the front door. The man then lunged at police with a knife.

“Our officers very quickly subdued the man and took him into custody. No guns were used in the man’s arrest.”

Commander Smith said that no police were injured in the incident. The man received minor injuries and was treated at the scene by Ambulance Tasmania.

“Police would like to thank Mowbray residents for their patience and assistance,” Commander Smith said.

The man is continuing to assist police with their enquiries, and it is expected to face charges including breach of a restraint order and assault.
