Mountain bikes stolen from Launceston PCYC

Police are seeking public assistance following the theft of 12 mountain bikes from the Launceston PCYC, Newstead, sometime between Saturday 24 March and earlier today.

The brands of mountain bikes include Jamis, Giant (Talon) and Scott, with the majority of bikes being white Jamis.

The bikes are used by Project Booyah, which is a ‘youth at-risk’ 20-week program designed to re-engage 15 to 17-year-olds into formal education and/or vocational opportunities. The program is jointly run by Tasmania Police, PCYC, Save the Children and TasTAFE.

Part of the program involves ‘mentor days’ where participants enjoy outdoor recreational challenges and activities. The bikes are used for day trips and multi-night camps.

“It’s really disappointing for the program, participants and PCYC community as a whole to have these bikes stolen. We’re really keen to get them back as quickly as possible so it doesn’t impact our kids too much.” Inspector Gary Williams from Launceston Police said.

Police would like to hear from anyone who may have information about the theft. Information can be provided anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at crimestopperstas.com.au
