Motorcycle rider fatality – Launceston CBD
At about 12:40am this morning, Sunday 2 August 2020, a 28 year old man from Kings Meadows was travelling south on Wellington Street, Launceston, on a black Kawasaki motorcycle. At this time the man has collided with a silver Suzuki hatch which was travelling east on Paterson Street, Launceston, driven by a 25 year old man from Mowbray.
First aid was rendered to the male rider but unfortunately, he has died at the scene of the crash. The driver of the Suzuki was operating as an Uber and had two passengers in his vehicle. The passengers were uninjured and the driver was taken to the LGH for assessment for what are believed to be minor injuries.
Tasmania Police, Tas Fire and Ambulance Tasmania all attended the scene. The scene was examined by police Crash Investigation Services and Forensic Services. The intersection was partially closed for some time and police would like to thank drivers during that period for their patience and cooperation.
Initial investigations are that the motorcycle rider was travelling well in excess of the posted speed limit and may have disobeyed a red light. It is also possible that alcohol was a contributing factor to this crash.
Police would ask any witnesses that saw the motorcycle travelling in the Launceston CBD prior to the crash to contact Northern Crash Investigation Services.
Inspector Ruth Orr will be available for media interview, if requested, at a time to be confirmed on Sunday 2 August 2020 at the back of the Launceston Police Station.
