Midland Highway crash

About 9:40am on Monday 18 April 2011 a crash has occurred on the Midland Highway, Bagdad.  Initial investigations suggest a white Toyota sedan with P plates travelling towards Hobart has crossed to the wrong side of the road colliding head on with a fully laden log truck travelling in the opposite direction.

The log truck was fitted with a front underrun protection system (FUPS) which appears to have prevented the vehicle from going underneath the truck. The driver of the truck has taken evasive action to avoid a further collision with other vehicles and his actions are commendable.

The sole female occupant of the Toyota sedan has suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital for observation. She is extremely lucky not to have suffered more serious injuries. The driver of the truck was uninjured.

Early indications are that fatigue was a factor in the accident and Tasmania Police would like to issue a timely reminder to road users to pull over and rest if feeling fatigued.

Anyone who witnessed a white Toyota sedan with P plates travelling on the Midland Highway towards Hobart during the morning of the 18/4/2011 is asked to contact Constable Alex Bonde at the Bridgewater Police Station on (03) 6268 4103 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
