Mayfield man charged with assault and other charges after resisting arrest
A 19-year-old man has been charged with burglary, stealing, aggravated assault and resist police following an incident in Mayfield last night.
About 11pm, police responded to a call from the man who claimed he had committed a burglary.
Police attended and spoke to the man briefly before he ran from the scene. After searching the address police recovered approximately $5000 in suspected stolen property, believed to be linked to a burglary earlier in the evening.
Police returned to the address about 1:15am and located the man, who police will allege began to resist violently when two officers attempted to arrest him.
One officer deployed OC spray in an attempt to subdue the man, who grabbed the cannister and threatened to spray the officer before using physical force against her.
The man then used physical force against a second officer before a third officer deployed OC spray towards the man for a second time, which allowed police to handcuff and effectively restraint him.
As a result of this incident two police officers were treated in the Launceston General Hospital for minor injuries.
The man remains in custody and is expected to appear in the Launceston Magistrates’ Court at 2.15pm today.
