Police yesterday rescued two recreational fishermen from the mouth of the Mersey River, Devonport following reports of a vessel in distress.

At 2.50pm Police were notified that two distress flares had been activated.

A 60-year-old Spreyton man and a 42-year-old East Devonport man, experienced engine failure causing their 4.5 metre aluminium runabout to become grounded on a breakwater.

The Police Vessel Sentinel was deployed along with officers on foot to assist the men.

The occupants of the vessel were recovered unharmed.  Both occupants were wearing lifejackets.

Several unsuccessful attempts were made to re-float the vessel.

Tasmania Police would like to remind all boat owners of the importance of practicing safe activities whilst on the water.

All boat owners should ensure their vessel and required safety equipment is serviceable and in good working condition.   Items such as life jackets, flares, EPIRBS etc. should all be checked prior to heading out on the water to ensure they function correctly.
