A Launceston man was winched from Mount Eliza by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter last night after becoming disoriented and activating his EPIRB.

Shortly before 5.30pm last night, Tasmania Police were advised by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) of an EPIRB activation near Mount Eliza, on the Mount Anne track, in the South West National Park.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was dispatched.

Shortly after, a 20-year-old Launceston man was located uninjured but disorientated on the North Western side of the mountain.

He was winched from the scene and flown to Hobart.

Tasmania Police remind all bush walkers:

• to comply with all Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service signage
• to register distress beacons via the AMSA website – amsa.gov.au
• to carry appropriate equipment and plan for extreme weather conditions
• to advise someone of travel plans and intended route.
