Man remanded in custody following evade

A 30 year old West Ulverstone man has been remanded in custody and had his vehicle clamped for six months following an evade incident in Launceston yesterday.

About 10:50 pm on Monday 24 December 2018, members of Northern Road and Public Order Services attempted to intercept a black Holden Commodore sedan on Charles Street, Launceston, the vehicle subsequently evaded police.

As a result of the manner of driving of the vehicle, road spike points were put in place resulting in a successful deployment on the Bass Highway near Travellers Rest.

The vehicle continued to avoid apprehension by police and drove onto the Bass Highway at Prospect, on the incorrect side of the road.

To minimise any further risk to the public, police and the driver, police took deliberate action to immobilise the vehicle.  This was done successfully and the male driver was arrested and conveyed to Launceston Police Station.

The man returned a positive indication for drug driving, he was charged with multiple traffic offences, including, evading police, reckless driving, disqualified driving and using an unregistered motor vehicle. The black Commodore was clamped for a 6 month period.

The man was detained to appear in an after- hours court at Launceston Tuesday 25 December 2018.  As a result of this appearance the male was remanded in custody and will next appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court on Thursday 27 December 2018 at 9:45 am.

No one was injured as a result of this incident however damage was caused to both vehicles.

It’s timely to remind motorists that drug driving is one of the Fatal Five contributing factors to serious and fatal crashes on our roads.
