Man killed in a workplace incident

A 32 year old man from South Arm was killed in a workplace accident at the McRobies Road Tip, at South Hobart earlier this morning.

The incident occurred at approximately 10.45am when a large steel beam fell onto the man when he was positioning the beam into a hole prior to being pile-driven into the ground.  The beam is to be used in the construction of a new waste transfer refuge station, which is being built by sub-contractors for the Hobart City Council.

During the positioning of the beam, the beam swung around in the air hitting the man on the head.  The webbing, connecting the beam to the excavator then broke free, resulting in the beam falling on top of the man and he sustained critical injuries.  First aid was rendered at the scene; however the man died as a result of the injuries he received.

Police and Workplace Standards are currently at the scene undertaking investigations in order to prepare a report for the Coroner.  A number of workers working in the area are currently assisting police with their enquiries.

The name of the deceased has not been released at this time.
