A 37 year old Cygnet man has drowned while surfing at Blackmans Bay Beach, south of Hobart, this morning.

Police and Ambulance Tasmania were called to the beach following a report of a surfer in distress about 100m off the shore about 8.15am today.

“Police would like to thank the member of the public who went to the assistance of the man.  He entered the water from his kayak and was able to position the man on the surf board.  A police officer entered the water and swam to assist.  Together they brought the man to shore and police and Ambulance Tasmania paramedics commenced CPR,” Inspector Matthew Richman said today.

“Unfortunately, attempts to resuscitate the man were not successful.

“I would particularly like to recognise the selfless and brave actions of the member of the public and the police officer who entered the water to try and save the man.  The member of the public dislocated his shoulder and was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital for treatment. The police officer was taken to hospital with mild hypothermia.  Both have been released.”

“This is a tragic situation. Next of kin have been notified and our thoughts are with the man’s family and loved ones at this difficult time,” Inspector Richman said.

Investigations are continuing and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
