A 23 year old Claremont man is in police custody after a 27 year old woman was shot in the stomach at a private residence in Cammeray Road in Claremont last night.

Detective Inspector Craig Joel said: “The woman was taken to the Royal Hobart Hospital about 9 pm last night and is undergoing treatment.  Her injuries are not life threatening at this time.  The woman has not yet made a statement to police.”

The man has not yet been charged, and police are still investigating to determine if other people were involved.  Part of the investigation will be to determine if the incident is family violence.

The man in custody is known to the woman.

Inspector Joel said:  “Police will remain at the house today while forensic and other crime scene examinations are conducted.”
